A new survey of 2,000 Americans reveals that most people consider the start of "real" adulthood to be around age 27. This delayed sense of maturity stems from several key factors that define what it means to be a full-fledged adult.
Why Age 27?: Over half of the respondents cited paying their own bills, achieving financial independence, and prioritizing responsibilities over fun as the true markers of adulthood. These milestones, along with moving out of parents' homes and landing a first job in one's chosen field, were seen as pivotal moments in the transition to adulthood.
Financial Responsibility: The survey found that most people start taking their finances seriously at age 28, indicating a shift towards more adult-like behavior around this time.
Reality Check: A notable 42% of respondents admitted that being an adult is harder than they expected, highlighting the challenges that come with newfound independence.
So, while many may feel like they're still figuring it out in their mid-20s, it seems that adulthood truly kicks in around 27—at least according to this survey.
